Gay couple make GQ's power list
Sir Elton John and partner David Furnish have been recognised as among the most powerful men in Britain by GQ.
They are jointly listed at number 30 on the magazine's 100 most powerful men list, the only joint entry.
The magazine says the couple, who entered into a civil partnership in 2006, are worth £225m.
"Their ninth annual white tie and tiara ball was attended by le tout showbiz and raised £3.5m for the Elton John AIDS Foundation," the citation reads.
"Meanwhile, Furnish produced Gnomeo And Juliet."
Last year they were listed at number 40.
The Prime Minister's Director of Political Strategy, Spencer Livermore, appears on the list for the first time.
Last year PinkNews.co.uk named him the most powerful gay person in Britain.
GQ places him at number 84, describing him as "Labour's precociously young attack dog. Livermore dreams up strategies while plugged into his iPod on the Tube every morning."
Actor Sir Ian McKellen also makes it onto the list for the first time at number 98.
Described as a 'gay icon,' GQ comments that "McKellen had outstanding reviews when he stripped on stage for King Lear at Stratford. "
The magazine chose Tory leader David Cameron as the most powerful man in Britain with Prime Minister Gordon Brown second, media executive James Murdoch third, Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King fourth and Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy fifth.
The March edition of GQ is on sale from tomorrow.
