The Brazilian offices of the comedy group behind Netflix’s controversial ‘gay Jesus’ movie were set ablaze on Christmas Eve after being bombarded by Molotov cocktails.

Porta dos Fundos‘ headquarters in Rio de Janeiro were hit with several makeshift petrol bombs in the early hours of Tuesday, December 24. Fortunately a security guard was able to control the fire and no one was harmed.

The production company had faced accusations of blasphemy after creating The First Temptation of Christ, a parody film that portrays Jesus bringing home his boyfriend, Orlando, to meet the Holy Family.

The group wrote on Twitter after the attack: “Porta dos Fundos condemns any act of violence and has made the security camera images available to the authorities and expects those responsible for the attacks to be found and punished.

“But for now, we anticipate that we will move on, more united, stronger, more inspired, and confident that the country will survive this storm of hatred and love will prevail along with freedom of speech.”

Over two million people in the predominantly Catholic country signed a petition calling on Netflix to remove Porta dos Fundos’ parody film for “seriously offending Christians”.

The creators of the film were called “demons” and “heretics”, and even though the film was not intended to be a documentary, one person’s reason for signing the petition was: “It is a serious offence against Jesus Christ and the Christians! It has no historical evidence to support the insinuations presented.”

The son of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro, took to Twitter to call the Christmas special “garbage”, adding that the filmmakers “do not represent Brazilian society.”

Porta dos Fundos won an International Emmy for their last holiday special, a parody of The Hangover that follows the adventures of Jesus’s disciples after they wake up hungover the “morning after the Last Supper… wondering where their Messiah is”.
